How to layer your skincare

How to layer your skincare

Here's the thing nobody tells you when you start: the products matter less than you'd think, and the order matters more.

Layer good products in the wrong sequence and half of them can't do their job. Get the order right and even a simple routine works beautifully.

So let's kill the overwhelm. There's one rule, and then there's the order.

The only rule you need: thin to thick

Apply your products from lightest and most watery to richest and most creamy. That's it. Thin, watery formulas need to reach your skin first; if you put a rich cream on beforehand, the watery layers can't get through it. Thin to thick — everything else follows from that.

Watery before creamy. If you remember nothing else, remember that.

The order, step by step

  1. Cleanse. Start with a clean face. This lifts away the day (or night), so everything after it lands on skin, not on grime. In the morning a gentle cleanse or even just water is fine; at night, cleanse properly.
  2. Tone. A modern toner isn't the stripping stuff of the past — it's a watery first layer of hydration that preps the skin and helps the next steps absorb. Pat it in with your hands.
  3. Treat. This is where your serums, essences and ampoules go — the lightweight, concentrated steps that target a specific thing (hydration, brightness, calming). If you use more than one, go thinnest first. This is the "active" heart of your routine.
  4. Moisturise. A moisturiser seals everything in and softens the skin. It's the lid on the jar — it holds all that hydration where it belongs and stops it evaporating away.
  5. SPF (mornings only). Always last in your morning routine, and never optional. Sunscreen sits on top to protect everything underneath. We'll say it plainly: this is the single most important step for keeping skin healthy over time.

A few things that trip people up

  • Wait a moment between steps, but don't obsess. Let each layer sink in for a few seconds; you don't need a stopwatch.
  • Damp skin helps. Applying hydrating steps onto slightly damp skin helps them absorb — just don't apply SPF onto a wet face.
  • More steps isn't better. A four-step routine done consistently beats a ten-step one you resent. Add steps only when you know why you're adding them.
  • Morning and night differ. SPF is a morning-only step; richer treatments often suit the evening. Otherwise the order is the same.

The simplest version that still works

If all of this still feels like a lot, here's the honest minimum that genuinely looks after your skin: cleanse → hydrate (a toner or essence) → moisturise, and → wear SPF in the day. Four steps. Master that, and you can add to it later — from a place of understanding, not guesswork.

Want it decided for you?

That's rather the point of Pare — every one of our routines is already ordered correctly, so you don't have to think about it. Start with The Simple Start →. Or choose your own routine Routines.

Introduce new products one at a time and patch-test first, so if something doesn't agree with you, you know which one it was. Skincare supports healthy skin; for a specific concern, see a doctor or dermatologist.
