Centella (cica), explained

Centella (cica), explained

Look at the back of half the Korean skincare you'll ever pick up and you'll spot the same word: centella, often shortened to cica. It's quietly everywhere.

So what is it, and why does it turn up in so many calming products?

What centella is

Centella asiatica is a small green herb that's been used in traditional skincare and wellness for a very long time. On an ingredients list you might see it as Centella Asiatica Extract, or by the names of its active compounds — madecassoside, asiaticoside, and the "cica" nickname comes from these. When a product is branded "cica," centella is the star.

What it does for skin

Centella's whole reputation is built on one word: calm. It's known for soothing skin that feels irritated, red, or reactive, and for helping support the skin barrier so it can settle.

  • Soothes and comforts. It's the go-to for skin that feels hot, tight, or over-it — after too much sun, too many actives, or just a stressful week.
  • Supports the barrier. It helps strengthen and comfort the skin's protective layer, which is what keeps moisture in and irritation out.
  • Rich in antioxidants. It brings a dose of antioxidant support, which skin generally benefits from.

If snail mucin is about hydration, centella is about calm. That's the simplest way to hold the difference.

When to reach for it

Centella earns its place whenever skin needs settling rather than pushing:

  • Your skin is red, reactive, or sensitive and you want to calm things down.
  • You've overdone the actives (an acid or retinoid left you tight and irritated) and need to rebuild comfort.
  • Your barrier feels compromised — skin stinging at products it used to tolerate, feeling tight or looking blotchy.
  • You just want a gentle, everyday soothing step that plays well with everything else.

It's mild enough for daily use and pairs happily with hydrators like snail mucin or hyaluronic acid — calm plus hydration is a lovely combination for stressed skin.

How to use it

Centella shows up in toners, essences, ampoules and creams. Slot it into your routine at the matching step — a cica toner after cleansing, a cica ampoule in your treat step, a cica cream to moisturise. Because it's so gentle, you can use it morning and night, and lean on it more heavily during the weeks your skin is having a hard time.

The honest bottom line

Centella won't transform your skin overnight, and it isn't trying to. It's the ingredient you reach for when skin needs less drama, not more — a calm, well-tolerated way to soothe irritation and support a healthier barrier. Which is exactly why it's behind so much of the K-beauty you'll meet, and why it's a cornerstone of the way we think about looking after sensitive skin.

Patch-test anything new, and introduce one product at a time. Skincare supports and maintains healthy skin; it isn't a treatment for medical skin conditions. Persistent redness or irritation is worth showing a doctor or dermatologist.
